  1. TIME OF DAY α―“βœ¦

Originally, the plan was to film this sequence around late evening, so about 6:30 pm. However, a scheduling conflict arose when Tina learned she had family errands the night before production day at the proposed time, so I had to make a quick decision to switch to a β€œgolden hours” time period. We started getting ready at around 3:00 pm. While she was finishing her makeup, I not only set up my equipment, mostly testing out different modes on the camera, but also communicated with Tina on my ideas and vision for the scene: the feelings of the character of the song at specific verses and lyrics. I was mostly keen on getting the tracking shots of the main character walking while lip-syncing to the song.

  1. LOCATION: SAIGON PEARL + LIGHTING Φ΄ ΰ£ͺ𖀐⋆

The area was spacious, with several open spots where we captured strong shots with few people in the background. For lighting, I didn't need any artificial sourcesβ€”the filming area had a few trees, so plenty of sunlight filled the frame with just the right yellow hues to create the warm sensation I wanted. I was thrilled with how the natural light complemented my clothing choice for the actress (detailed in Production Diary Vlog: Episode 2). The yellow top became even more vibrant, making Tina stand out from the background in both medium close-ups and long shots.

The biggest drawback of this location that I failed to acknowledge during the scouting stage was the high number of vehicles parked along the road. The main reason why I didn’t notice it before was that I went to check out the spot on one of the weekdays when there weren’t that many visitors in the area. In fact, while filming one of the shots tracking backwards, my right leg accidentally hit a hot pipe from a motorcycle. I managed to pull away quickly enough to minimize the burn, but still had to pay a visit to the doctors the day after:)

  1. CAMERAWORK & SETTINGS β”€β”€β˜… Λ™πŸ“ ̟ !!

Despite the low number of cars and vehicles passing by, I decided against using a tripod for safety reasons and to avoid risking damage to the equipment. All shots that day were filmed handheld. To ensure sharp focus and quality footage, I used Manual Focus Peaking (MF Peaking Settings), which displays red lines to indicate what's in focus, allowing me to control it myselfβ€”my past experiences with auto-focus haven't been great. I also payed high attention to keeping my hands steady due to the lack of a professional gimbal to ensure stable shots.

To avoid overexposure, especially in such a bright environment, I would frequently adjust the ISO a little lower than average to make sure the sensor can handle the significant contrast, successfully preventing loss of details in highlights and shadows. This shot below is a good example of how the camera captured the juxtaposition just right.

P/s: the cars irritate me so bad:( at least they were evenly parked apart I guess…

  1. MINI PHOTOSHOOT ⸜(q˃ α΅• Λ‚ )⸝♑

Inspired by Gracie Abrams, I decided to use the time for some behind-the-scenes social media content. This would be used for β€œsneak peek” material, create conversations, and stir up excitement for the release of the music video.

~ This is just one of many photos I took. Again with the motorcycles:(((
